Hey, hey, heyyy! What’s crackin’ Beautiful people?
We all know soda is so bad & there are literally no nutrients in it for us. By this point you should be starting to ask yourself with every dietary choice, “Is this helping me or hurting me?” If it’s hurting you & it’s somewhat of an addiction, it is important to find things that can satisfy you in its place. Luckily, I’ve never been able to take more than a couple sips of soda…you know those little half-sized cans? My sister bought me some one time because she thought this might be the solution. Funny, it isn’t a life sustaining beverage like say, water so why were we trying to find a way to get me cracked out on soda?! Oh, you don’t like cigarettes? Hmm, maybe if you try a different kind like ultra lights we can get you chain-smoking & diagnosed with cancer quicker. Sounds pretty ridiculous, right? But soda is a really hard habit for a lot of people to kick. My kids love soda, or at least the idea of it. It’s sweet & fizzy, what’s not to love? No matter how much I explain to them how bad it is, they will have it whenever the opportunity presents itself & I’m not around to give them the “don’t even think about it” stink-eye. But I have a vice too…mine is pretty little drinks with “spritzer” & “cooler” in their names and they’re sweet and fizzy too. There is nothing like sitting on a beach-front terrace overlooking Coronado, with a cocktail in my hand, getting a little vitamin D. It doesn’t have to be alcoholic, many times it’s just the ritual. I believe this is the case for my boys as well. So I make a point to create fun replacements to give us all a fix. I make them lemon-lime “soda” with sparkling mineral water, a lemon, a lime & some liquid stevia now on Friday’s with their popcorn & they think they are doin’ it!
Here is a new one I came up with. Don’t worry, it’s been Brownboy Superhero approved. So if a 4 & 8 year old think it’s better than soda, it’s worth a try. I personally love it & will be drinking it lots in this last leg of summer. The cucumber is extra hydrating, mild and refreshing while the strawberries add sweetness. Cucumbers are a good source of potassium–a heart friendly electrolyte & also help reduce blood pressure and heart rates by countering effects of sodium. Cucumbers have mild diuretic property probably due to their high water and potassium content, which helps keep weight gain and high blood pressure in check. Strawberries are low on the glycemic index, they’re an excellent source of vitamin C–a serving gives you 98% of your daily value which makes them a powerful antioxidant, rich in B-complex vitamins, vitamins A & E, potassium iron & copper…the list goes on.
