Strawberry Basil Green Smoothie

Good Afternoon Beautiful People!

I’ve been trying to think of a new twist on the typical strawberry smoothie & a drink I recently had with muddled strawberries, basil & rum came to mind.  I woke up this morning thinking, “Why not try strawberries & basil in a smoothie?!”  As I’ve said in posts elsewhere, strawberries are not only delicious but they have so much healing power!  They are are full of so many vitamins & nutrients which aid in eye, brain & heart health.  Strawberries are full of anti-oxidants, potassium, detoxifiers & flavonoids.  They are helpful in supporting joint health & have been known to ease arthritis.  Vitamin-C, Folate & Anthocyanin, Quercetin & Kaempferol (few of the many Flavonoids in strawberries which possess excellent anti oxidant and anti carcinogenic properties) together form an excellent team to fight cancer & tumor. A daily intake of strawberries is seen to have remarkably brought down the growth of cancerous cells.  Additionally, strawberries are rich in iodine too, which is very helpful for proper functioning of the brain & nervous system.  That’s a powerful berry, isn’t it?!

Basil shouldn’t be underestimated either.  The herbs’ parts are very low in calories and contain no cholesterol, but are very rich source of many essential nutrients, minerals, and vitamins that are required for optimum health.  Basil leaves contain much health benefiting essential oils such as eugenol, citronellol, linalool, citral, limonene and terpineol. These compounds are known to have anti-inflammatory & anti-bacterial properties.  Basil contains exceptionally high levels of beta-carotene, vitamin A, cryptoxanthin, lutein andzea-xanthin. These compounds help act as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play a role in aging and various disease processes.

I did a little search online & found a few recipes that sounded pretty good.  But by taking the things I liked from each, I came up with a recipe that is GREAT.  Well, I think it’s pretty great anyways…I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

2 cups whole strawberries

1 frozen banana (bananas should be peeled & frozen in advance)

juice of  1/2 TO 1 whole lime

5-6 fresh basil leaves

4 cups fresh baby spinach

1 cup almond milk

Add the spinach & basil along with 1 cup almond milk to the blender.  Blend until greens are almost smooth.  Add the strawberries and lime juice.  Blend 30 seconds and add the frozen banana.  Blend until smooth. Enjoy!
