I hope everyone is making it through the week A-okay! The weather is changing and I’m seeing everyone around me getting sick. If you are currently fighting a cold, feel one coming on or just want to take preventative measures, incorporating a little ginger into your diet can go a long way. Ginger is an amazing root packed with tons of essential nutrients & rejuvenating compounds. As small as an 1″x1″ piece can provide a ton of uh-maaaazing benefits; combatting cancer being at the top of that list! For centuries, ginger has been used as an effective cure to the common cold. Even when the symptoms become severe, steeping ginger in hot water to make a tea can alleviate and itchy or sore throat, a cough & even blocked nasal passages. It also has carminative properties. In normal speak, for people who are experiencing dyspepsia or stomach ailments, ginger is an effective remedy (think ginger ale). The health benefits of ginger for the digestive & gastrointestinal tract don’t end there. Components like shogaols and gingerols can resolve vomiting and nausea because it controls the peristaltic movement of the muscles. Cool, huh? For people who are experiencing rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis or inflammation due to injury, ginger can also work as an anti-inflammatory. And ladies, pay attention! As I was saying about it’s impact on cancer, for years, ginger has been known to provide relief when it comes to beating ovarian cancer. The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center found out through their research that ginger can also destroy ovarian cancer cells. Aside from that, it also gives plenty of benefits for people who are suffering from colon cancer. The University studied how ginger could hinder the progression of colorectal cancer cells. There are a lot of ways to get ginger in your diet– stir frys, tea, even try a simple ginger syrup to add to sparkling mineral water. But of course, juicing is always an awesome way to get the benefits of raw ginger. I love the taste of ginger with apples! Try this one out…
JAZZY GINGER APPLE JUICE:
3 kale leaves
3 chard leaves
2 large handfuls spinach
1/2 cucumber (peeled if not organic)
1-inch piece fresh ginger
2 apples (I prefer one green, one red but adjust to your liking)
grapes to sweeten (optional)
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Juice the ingredients (except the lemon juice) in the order listed above. If you are adding grapes to sweeten, save a few pieces of apple to run through the juicer afterwards (because they are hard, they push the softer fruit through). Stir in the lemon juice & serve immediately or flash freeze. Enjoy!
